Pros and cons of studying abroad

Now a day more students are seriously considering studying abroad. The thought of leaving own country is influenced by many reasons. Some of such reasons I had talked about in my last blog “Why Indian doctors want to practice outside the country?” Moreover, impact on someone’s decision also depends on the culture of the people in the home country. Other than medical students there is huge Indian student population which is concerned for its future. This young population wants to go outside country for their bread and butter. There is a real hunger among students to learn more about the options for studying and working outside.

Most of the developed countries provide chances to get quality knowledge and skills in new environment. The foreign universities are well equipped with infrastructure needed to keep up the overall quality of education. While studying abroad, students especially from developing country have goals that they can get knowledge and skills that are not available in their home country.

In addition to knowledge and skill, interaction with people from different culture, physical appearance, and mind-set broadens up once horizon to live in multicultural world. Facing different people with different culture and customs can enhance student’s experience for dealing with others. Attending abroad university and interacting with many students around the world seems fascinating. It also augments one’s experience in facing different culture.
It has always been said that studying abroad changes habits of the students after they come back to their home country. People also think that the students forget their customs and adopt western culture. Such thoughts are not true because customs is different in every country. Acceptable customs are based on countries perception.

In addition to the above problem, it has been seen that students studying abroad face diverse challenges as a result of language and cultural barriers. They often face lack of social support, unfriendliness, and homesickness, face financial as well as academic difficulties and sometimes even have to cope with racial discrimination. It has been said specifically for the field of medical education that immigrant medical students suffer from higher levels of stress, reduced quality of life as well as the loss of social contacts. Besides, they achieve lower results in pre-clinical written tests, in clinical examinations as well as state examinations, and show an extended duration of study as well as higher drop-out rates.

To conclude I would just say that one should consider both, the brighter and the darker side of studying abroad and then take the decision.

So this is the time to put up your thinking cap and ask yourself, is it really worth leaving own nation and practice in a foreign land when you know you have to face adverse conditions in other country. Any country stands because of its young educated brains so what do you think, why our young Indian doctors are moving to foreign lands when they know all that our country’s health status is not good?

Now you tell me, if it is right or wrong to look out side India to study and practice?
