In
the last post as we have discussed about the Part II written exam of Membership
of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland (MRCPI) Obstetrics and
Gynaecology Examination, in this post we would further extend the information
about the MRCPI exam by discussing about the Part II OSCE/Clinical examination.
The MRCPI Part II Obstetrics and
Gynaecology Examination is available to candidates who meet the criteria
detailed under the examination regulations.
The Part II OSCE/Clinical
examination encompasses a clinical and objective structured clinical
examination (OSCE). Candidates who have MRCPI Part II Obstetrics &
Gynaecology written examination within the past two years are eligible for the
Part II OSCE/Clinical exam that leads to membership by pass before applying for
the MRCPI Part II Obstetrics & Gynaecology OSCE/Clinical exam. If the 2
year limit of appearing in the Part II OSCE/Clinical exam exceeds then the
candidate must re-attempt the Part II Written examination.
The OSCE examination comprises seven
different stations of ten-minute duration with at least one rest station. The seven
OSCE stations test the candidate’s knowledge and assessing the Obstetrics and
Gynaecology. It also analyses the candidate’s approach of problem-solving,
diagnosis, investigation, treatment, clinical and communication skills. There
is an absence of patient at the rest station. It's a short break and considered
as a prospect for preparation of the next station.
The objective structured clinical
examination (OSCE) is a clinical exam that includes real patients. It comprises
seven different stations of 10 minutes each and one long clinical case pertaining
to either obstetrics or gynaecology of 40 minutes. 20 minutes are allotted to
the candidate for taking a history and examine the patient before discussing
the case with two examiners for another 20 minutes.
The fee for attempting the Part II
OSCE/Clinical exam is €780 for candidates from Ireland, or €1,360 for candidates
from other countries. The date for the upcoming examination along with closing
date for the exam is as follows:
There are limited places for
attempting the examination. If the application number exceeds the available
number of places, then doctors are considered for the exam who have either left
with only one attempt for the exam or on the basis of Basic Specialist Training
programme. If a place can’t be offered after being registered then they are
positioned on a waiting list and are given a place if it becomes available. The
fee of the candidate is refunded if a place is not allocated for the
examination.
