Webinar: A New Learning Aid (Contraception + UKMEC Criteria)

         There are various significant topics in the syllabus of MRCOG examination that is organised by the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG) which cannot be grasped easily. The webinars proved to be a relevant approach for an effective learning of these topics as through webinar there is an online interaction between candidates and the respective mentor. The mentor provides all the relevant information on a specific topic with elaborated knowledge.

Keeping this in mind, the CrackingMRCOG which is an online interactive platform organises various webinars under the mentorship of Dr. Richa Saxena. The upcoming webinar is on November 3, 2018 on “Contraception and UKMEC Criteria”.

Contraception is the intentional prevention of conception that assists several couples in management of family planning conditions. Several contraceptive methods are available which are based on three general strategies:
(1) Prevention of ovulation;
(2) Prevention of fertilisation or
(3) Prevention of implantation.

The methods of contraception are categorised into two distinct forms as: temporary and permanent methods. The temporary method comprises natural regulation of fertility (e.g. calendar method, ovulation method, basal body temperature method, etc.); barrier methods (e.g. condoms, cervical cap, etc.); hormonal contraception (e.g. combined oral contraceptive pills, progestin-only pill, etc.); intrauterine contraception (e.g. copper intrauterine contraceptive devices); and emergency contraception methods. The permanent method comprises sterilisation approaches, and vasectomy.

The efficacy of these contraceptive methods depends on different factors such as smoking, diabetes, risk factors of other diseases, etc. The United Kingdom Medical Eligibility Criteria (UKMEC) regarding the usage of various contraceptive methods have been adopted from the from the WHO medical eligibility criteria (WHOMEC).
