MRCOG 3: Tips for the Examination

        Preparation of the OSCE examination varies from preparation of theory examination (MRCOG-1 and MRCOG-2). The candidate’s theoretical knowledge is has already been tested in MRCOG Part 2 examination and thus, it is a good idea to immediately attempt the Part 3 examination as the concepts regarding various topics of the obstetrics and gynaecology is still fresh.

       Here, we would like to give some tips that the candidates must master in order to sail through the examination.

  • Do not take stress: Candidates must not panic and should treat the examination as a routine day in the clinic where they are applying the clinical knowledge and thinking about patient safety. 
  • Keep a calm and pleasant face, and maintain an eye contact with the role player.
  • The candidate must remember ‘not to call the consultant for anything’ as it is likely to demonstrated under confidence of the candidate.
  • Candidates must be aware about the structure of the National healthcare Services (NHS) in the UK.
  • Candidates must spend time in carefully reading the question.
  • The candidates should focus on the clinical scenario and recollect the clinical knowledge regarding the clinical scenario.
  • The candidate needs to adopt a friendly approach in a task with simulated patient and focus on nonverbal aspects of their communication
  • The candidate must carefully listen to the role-player and observe their body language and expressions. 
  • Candidates must preferably practice with the help of their exam buddy and time their practice sessions so that they get well acquainted in answering the questions within the stipulated time.
  • The candidates must make use of props if they are present in the OSCE examination.
  • Candidates must try practicing drawings for explaining anatomical details.
  • The candidates must take care to avoid using medical jargon while talking to the role-player.
  • Candidates must have a healthy diet and involve in some exercise activity on regular basis. 
  • Should have adequate amount of sleep as it is essential for good retention of facts and memory.
  • Avoid cramming for the examination by using stimulants like caffeine to be awake and revising into the early hours of the morning.
