deep and intense global situation, let us help to aware everyone about some
precautionary measures to be essentially taken in order to protect one-self.
Though,
everyone is suggested to take precautions, but pregnant women are highly
recommended to be take caution from the pandemic corona virus. Let us update you
with the recent NICE guidelines and their views on “COVID-19 in pregnant women”.
The guideline states that pregnant woman who have been exposed to COVID-19
experience either known COVID-19, or symptoms of cough, fever of or above 37.8
degrees
What should
she do?
·
Self-isolate
·
Do not go to school, work, NHS settings or
public areas.
·
Do not use public transport.
·
Stay at home and do not allow any visitors.
·
Ventilate the patients' room by opening a
window.
·
Separate themselves from other members of
their household as far as possible by using their own towels, crockery and
utensils and eating at different times.
·
Use friends, family or delivery services
to run errands, but advise them to leave items outside.
·
Contact maternity care provider (e.g.
midwife or antenatal clinic), to discuss attendance for routine antenatal
appointments.
·
Do not attend maternity triage units or
A&E unless in need of urgent obstetric or medical care.
What
precautionary methods should be taken for pregnant women attending routine
antenatal check-up?
1. Routine
antenatal care:
ü Routine
appointments for women with suspected or confirmed COVID-19 (growth scans,
OGTT, antenatal community or secondary care appointments) should be delayed
until after the recommended period of isolation.
ü More urgent
pre-arranged appointments (foetal medicine surveillance, high risk maternal
secondary care) should be conducted on basis of urgency and potential
risks/benefits.
ü If the
obstetric or midwifery care cannot be delayed until after the recommended
period of isolation, infection prevention and control measures should be
arranged locally to facilitate care.
2. Urgent/
Unscheduled antenatal care:
ü Early
pregnancy (EPU) or maternity triage units should provide advice over the phone.
If this requires discussion with a senior member of staff who is not
immediately available, a return telephone call should be arranged.
ü Women with
confirmed or suspected COVID-19 are isolated on arrival to EPU or triage units
and full PPE measures must be taken for the staff.
3. Intrapartum
care:
ü All women
should be encouraged to call the maternity unit for advice in early labour. Women
with mild COVID-19 symptoms can be encouraged to remain at home
(self-isolating) in early (latent phase) labour as per standard practice.
ü Women should
be advised to attend an obstetric unit for birth, where the baby can be
monitored using continuous electronic foetal monitoring.
Since,
COVID-19 is spreading at much higher rates and intensity, it necessitates the
demand for proper sanitation and precaution for every individual.
