Breast cancer awareness month (October 1- October 31)

Buddhism says—“Woman is the creator of the universe, the universe is her form; woman is the foundation of the world, she is the true form of the body. There is no jewel rarer than woman, no condition superior to that of a woman. There is not, nor has been, nor be any destiny to equal that of a woman; there is no kingdom, no wealth, to be compared with a woman; there is not, nor has been, nor be any holy place like unto a woman. There is no prayer to equal a woman” (Saktisangama Tantra).

But the one who is created to be a blessing to the entire universe sometimes becomes miserable due to a malignancy popularly known as “Cancer”, it occurs due to uncontrolled growth and division of cells. October is the breast cancer awareness month and in order to aware our darling ladies, we would love to shed some light on how to be cautious during the primary stage of the “Breast Cancer”.

Who could be at risk?

Though the cancer could be a scary thought for every individual but if proper and balanced precautions are taken, it could be cured too. Cancer is just not about the treatment but a lot more about precaution. Rate of risk tends be a bit less and as per the cancer screening guideline, the women with age group 45-54 years should get mammograms every year and they are among the high risk category.

What are the early precautionary measurements?

One should not ignore the early symptoms of breast cancer, therefore, a regular self-check becomes a priority for every woman, particularly post-menopausal women.

What are the symptoms of breast cancer?

The early symptoms of the breast cancer could include a painful breast or armpit, lump in the breast or discharge from the nipple. To be sure, one should visit the doctor even if no such symptoms appear as the primary ones.

How could breast cancer be diagnosed?

A manual examination or mammography could be suggested by the doctor. Mammography test is done through mammogram which is an X-ray of the breasts. Usually, the doctors use mammogram to detect the early signs of breast cancer.
On examination, if the sign and symptoms are present and confirmed by the doctor, one should still not panic because in most of the cases the lump in the breasts is harmless and the pain could be benign. It is always better to be sure though. The doctor could further suggest biopsy. Biopsy test would reveal the nature of the lump—whether it is benign or malignant. If the lump is cancerous, early detection is a life saver and the lump could be removed through surgery.

What could be the possible management and prevention?

Let us all be thankful to the medical advances achieved over the last few decades, today treatment of life threatening diseases are available. With an increasingly ageing population worldwide, the incidence of Breast Cancer may also rise. Prevention remains the most promising strategy for reducing breast cancer incidence and mortality. Research has identified the main risk factors associated with breast cancer occurrence, and the good news is that it is estimated that one third of the most common cancer types could be prevented by changes to the foods we eat and the amount of physical activity we do. Physical exercise, healthy food and yoga could be a boon to prevent oneself from the deadly disease.
