Why Indian doctors want to practice outside the country?

India has a huge educational infrastructure which is enough to cater the Indian as well as foreign student population. But when it comes to jobs and career, the Indian medical industry does not show a pretty face to the medical aspirants. Medical students have to complete a tough medical curriculum and get through tough examination series to get their graduate and post graduate medical degrees. After all this they have face various problems that make them think of other alternatives and more often they think over working in some other countries. Some of such problems are being discussed here in this blog.

Violence against doctors by the patient’s kinfolks is the biggest fear of doctors today in India. Assaults on doctors have become very common. In such situations everybody seems to stand against doctors, be it the public, the politicians, the government, and even, the judiciary. This all happen even after people believe that doctors are next to god. Everyone knows about doctors’ strike in Maharashtra that took place early this year, where doctors were attacked by patient’s peers at many places. Doctors suffered in silence and nobody took their stand. After this, what doctors can do now is not to send their children to a medical college in future. Do you really want that to happen?

Indian Medical Association (IMA) is an organisation which is meant to look after the interest of doctors as well as the well being of the community at large. IMA which caters over 215,000 doctors as its members through more than 1650 active local branches spread all over the country has completely failed in stopping illegalities and unjust laws forced upon the medical community in India. Many of such unjust laws should be challenged in court by IMA, but unfortunately these cases are being taken care of only by some individuals. Thus we need to have a stronger association which can protect doctors’ rights.

For any country world class healthcare facilities can only be established by investing more money into it. Where most of developed countries are investing 15-18% of their GDP as healthcare budget, Indian government has been allotting only 1.3% of GDP. This is very less and probably one of the lowest in the world. With this much low budget for healthcare in any country, people and government should not be expecting a world-class treatment and a world-class research work in medicine. Doctor’s association has never demand any hike in healthcare budget and it is also does not seem like IMA will ever make any such demand for hike. The situation is likely to linger on like this or may get worse.

Foreign countries had known India as a country where doctors treat their patients on streets. That’s all because of quackery that is flourishing in India. It has been a biggest problem in India. Quacks, if talking precisely, are those who are practising modern medicine without being registered with IMA. It does not include vaids, hakims, siddhas etc. Neither government and nor IMA has any keen interest in putting any check on such practices. Though many actions against quackery have been claimed by the authorities, but the things are ever the same. Due to all this, the qualified doctor has to compete with these quacks and this makes us believe that all our hard work and money in getting a medical degree have gone down the drain because the next door quack mints money without spending anything.

All these heart breaking facts compel doctors to doubt about the credibility of their qualification in India and hence they try to find out new spaces where their work and dedication can get some recognition. This is the point where doctors look forward to pursue some internationally recognised medical degrees or membership programs. One such membership program for Obs-Gyne is Members of Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (MRCOG).
