Indian Students Studying in Foreign Countries

There has been an increase in the number of Indian medical students going abroad for perusing the higher studies. This number is now growing at a faster pace than ever before. Most favourite study destinations out of the globe for Indian medical students are the United States, the United Kingdoms, Australia, Canada and Singapore.

Students give number of reasons for their decision of going abroad, these reasons include better lifestyle, healthy natural environment, infrastructure, job prospects, ease of admission, increased life expectancy rate etc. This list of reasons can be exhaustive, but these reasons due to which Indian medical students think of studying abroad always vary significantly from individual to individual. An individual may wish to study in another country due to the superior quality of education at a particular foreign university; however other may choose to study at some foreign university due to ease of getting admission as linked to an Indian university of the same importance.

According to an independent study, number of students migrating to such developed countries from China was largest in recent past. But now in terms of number of student emigrations and professional emigrations, the India is accelerating to overtake China. In the United States alone, around 45% of international students are either Chinese or the Indians. Canada also seems to head that way too far, as the percentage emigrations from China and India is more than 42%.

Australia has now stepped up as the second favourite destination for Indian students after a decline for several years after 2009 when there were several reports of racial attacks which then led to a drop in emigrations to Australia.

The United States had been the all-time favourite destination out of the globe, among the Indian students after the United Kingdoms and other countries. In a survey, it has been found that around 100,000 student visas were being issued to Indian students in the year 2012-13.

One of the new emerging favourite destinations for Indian student to look up for foreign studies is Germany. Students are showing increased liking towards Germany as a study destination and hence Germany may soon overtake many such countries as the most popular study destination in Europe for international students. It was seen that in 2015 Germany attracted around some 340,000 international students, when compared to almost 450,000 students in the United Kingdoms.

Increase in the Indian students’ emigrations overseas is immensely powered by a less number of seats in good Indian institutions, for the bright students. As most of the seats are reserved on the basis of cast system in India, general students who even scored 90% marks are not able to get into the Indian institution of their choice. Rising purchasing power among India’s growing middle class that has increased the affordability of overseas study. Reservation in colleges and jobs is one of the biggest factors that prevails this trend of brain drain from India. Students leaving India are some of the best brains.

So you tell me, shouldn’t the Indian medical students look outside country for better opportunities, when their own country is not providing them with equal opportunity to excel in their career. This system in our country has made professional career development impossible. Though professional career development is also difficult in foreign universities, but it is possible as it is based on one’s hard work and proper preparation. 1. Hi Manohar, you have asked a very genuine question. Being Indian we all feel that our country has such a huge educational infrastructure but that all goes into vain when the system does not brings you the equal opportunity. You will get your complete answer in my blog post "Why Indian doctors want to practice outside the country?".
