MRCOG-2 EXAMINATION

First of all we would like to CONGRATULATE all the candidates who have cleared their MRCOG part 1 examination in July 2018.

In the last blog, we have discussed about some stress relieving tips for the candidates awaiting their test results. In this blog we will discuss about the basic information required regarding the MRCOG-2 exam.
The MRCOG-2 exam is conducted in January and July every year. The advantage of conducting the exam early is that the final waypoint (the point at which a doctor obtains MRCOG) remains fixed. This helps in reducing the administrative impact of the date change on training programmes, both in the UK and overseas, as well as the College's Membership Department.
There are two main routes to approval of training for entry into the Part 2 MRCOG exam.
Route A:

  1. This route includes the trainees who are in the intermediate training in a recognised UK specialist training programme and are eligible for part2 MRCOG examination.
  2. Also, the trainees must be at ST3 level or above at the date of application for the Training Assessment.
  3. The trainees are required to complete the application form for assessment by ticking Route A and provide their National Training Number.
  4. Candidates are not required to submit any supporting documentation unless the college requires any additional information; for which they will send an email to the concerned candidate.

Route B:

  1. This route includes the trainees who are not in a recognized UK specialist training programme.
  2. These candidates have to provide documents pertaining to their spending a minimum of 4 years (out of which 2 years must be in speciality) in obstetrics and gynaecology fulltime or equivalent post-registration posts in the UK or overseas before being eligible to sit for MRCOG-2 examination.

There are two written papers in MRCOG-2 exam. Each paper counts for the same amount of marks (i.e. paper 1 count for 50% of the mark, and paper 2 also counts for 50% of the mark). Each paper consists of two question formats:

  • Single best answer questions (SBAs) –  40% of the total mark
  • Extended matching questions (EMQs) – 60% of the total mark
