Are you Preparing for MRCOG Part-2 Examination?

The Membership of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists is a very prestigious degree for specialization in the field of obstetrics and gynecology, which is recognized worldwide. Obtaining the MRCOG degree requires the candidate to attempt and clear the MRCOG examination, which comprises of a three-part assessment (MRCOG Part-1,2 and 3). The Part 2 MRCOG exam assesses the application of your knowledge in clinical scenarios.

Eligibility

Candidates who have completed the requirements enumerated below may apply for the Part 2 exam:
Have held for not less than 4 years a medical qualification recognised by the General Medical Council under Section 19 of the Medical Act 1983
Have been entitled to have their names or entered as fully registered medical practitioners in the Register maintained by the General Medical Council for minimum 3 years.
Candidates must attempt the Part 2 exam on at least one occasion within 7 years of passing the Part 1 exam. But, if the candidate fails to comply with this regulation then he/she will be required to pass the Part 1 exam again.

Venue and Timings
The Part 2 written exam is held in the British Isles and at selected overseas centres twice each year. Until 2017, the exam used to be held twice in the year, once in March and second time in September. 
Since 2018, exam would be held once in January and second time in July.

Syllabus
The Part-2 exam is divided into different modules as:

Examination Format
The exam, which is in English, comprises two papers consisting of single best answer questions (SBAs) and extended matching (EMQ) questions. 
There are two written papers. Each paper counts for the same amount of marks (i.e. paper 1 counts for 50% of the mark, and paper 2 also counts for 50% of the mark). Each paper consists of two question formats: 
Single best answer questions (SBAs) – worth 40% of the total mark
Extended matching questions (EMQs) – worth 60% of the total mark
Paper 1 is of 3 hour duration (180 minutes) and comprises 50 SBAs and 50 EMQs.
Paper 2 is of 3 hour duration (180 minutes) and comprises 50 SBAs and 50 EMQs.

Single Best Answer
MRCOG-2 exam has 100 Single Best Answers (SBAs). SBA type of exam format comprises of a question with typically 5 options as answer. The candidate has to choose one of the best options as an answer.

Extended Matching Questions
There is a theme for each EMQ. This can include a symptom, investigation, diagnosis or treatment, e.g. back pain, dyspnoea, diabetes, corticosteroids. There is s list of possible answers, called Options - This is a list of 8-10 possible answers, marked A–J. 
The question, also called the Lead-in statement - This outlines the clinical scenario and patient history, and asks the question to be matched with the option. There may be more than one clinical vignette for each theme.

Scoring
The scoring in the Part-2 exam is based on the percentile system, i.e. performance of the candidate is assessed in comparison to a set standard. Each correct answer is awarded 1 mark. Incorrect answers are not penalized i.e. each incorrect answer is awarded 0 marks.
