Are you preparing for MRCOG PART 1


The Membership of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists is a very prestigious degree for specialization in the field of obstetrics and gynecology, which is recognized worldwide. Obtaining the MRCOG degree requires the candidate to attempt and clear the MRCOG examination, which comprises of a three-part assessment (MRCOG Part-1,2 and 3).

ELIGIBILITY

Overseas candidates are eligible to give MRCOG Part 1 examination when they have obtained their medical degree. However, it is advisable for the overseas candidates to have attained some postgraduate training in obstetrics and gynecology before they apply for the part 1 examination.

VENUE AND TIMINGS

The part 1 examination is held in the British Isles and at selected overseas centres all over the world. Since 2018, the part 1 examination is being held twice a year, once in January and second time in July. All details related to the method of application are available on the RCOG website (www.rcog.org.uk).

EXAMINATION FORMAT

The part 1 examination comprises of two written papers, each consisting of 100 questions in the format of single best answers (SBAs). Therefore, there are a total of 200 questions inclusive of both the papers. Each paper is for the duration of 2.5 hours or 150 minutes with a break of 1 hour between the two papers, resulting in the total duration of 6 hours.

SYLLABUS OF MRCOG PART 1 EXAMINATION

The Part 1 MRCOG examination syllabus covers the basic and applied sciences relevant to the clinical practice of obstetrics and gynaecology and comprises of the following modules:

SCORING SYSTEM

Scoring for the MRCOG part 1 is done with the help of Ebel’s method. The scoring in this case is based on the percentile system, i.e. performance of the candidate is assessed in comparison to a set standard. The standard, which is set, is roughly equal to the knowledge expected out of an average UK ST2 trainee. In this method, the questions are categorized into nine categories based on their level of difficulty and relevance.The passing score usually varies between the top 60–65% candidates. Those candidates falling below this percentage will fail the examination. 

SINGLE BEST ANSWER (SBA)

The types of questions asked in the part 1 examination have format of the single best answers or the SBA. As the name suggests, in these types of questions, there can be only one best answer out of the given options. An SBA is typically composed of the following components:
