Coronavirus and pregnancy

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is an infectious disease that affects lungs and airways. This disease has emerged lately and has been declared as public health emergency of International concern by World Health Organization.

As of now, there is scarcity of research related to the new coronavirus. The pattern seen during the disease progression in humans indicates that the impact of virus is usually mild and manifest in the form of flu. However, immune-compromised patients, older adults and pregnant women should take extra precautions to combat the widespread coronavirus infection.

What can you do to prevent COVID-19?

Methods of prevention and safety tips are universal for all; however, pregnant women or post-partum women should be more careful and follow simple precautions such as:
  • Washing hands regularly and properly as soon as you come from public places to your home or workplace.
  • Sanitize your hand frequently.
  • Avoid public transport and crowded places.
  • If you are planning to travel abroad, make sure to check the provided government information of the specific country.
  • Maintain a safe distance from a person coughing or sneezing.
  • Follow respiratory hygiene.

What specific measures should be taken for women in or close to labour who are quarantine, or have tested positive?
  • There are national and local guidelines for healthcare setups for care and management of women in quarantine, or who have tested positive.
  • A multi-specialty team will be assigned to you and your baby in order to provide safe quality care.
  • Recently, a research was published in a peer-reviewed journal “The Lancet”, reveals that there is no evidence that COVID-19 causes serious problems in young babies or that it can pass to your developing baby while you are pregnant.
  • However, pregnant women are more vulnerable for infections than a woman who is not pregnant.

Is breastfeeding safe?
  • UNICEF has assured that coronavirus is unlikely to spread through breastfeeding as there is insignificant evidences of role of breast milk in passing on other similar viruses that affects lungs and airways.
  • A woman can continue breastfeeding while taking all required precautions such as hand-washing, sanitizing and wearing a mask while holding the baby.

If you develop any flu symptoms, self-isolate yourself and contact nearby emergency health care provider as soon as possible.
